Pasifika Community Consultation Meeting Resources
These resources are designed for school use. Here you will find resources which support staff PD as well as materials to assist in running a community consultation event to develop a list of Pasifika indicators of giftedness and talent reflective of your school community's beliefs and values.
This slideshow was developed for the purposes of Professional Development around New Zealand research into Pasifika characteristics of giftedness and talent. This serves as a foundation to build on when working with your own school community to develop indicators. It outlines; what gifted and talent means, why it is important to be aware, includes a short video from a teachers perspective about the use of having indicators developed with the community for the purpose of identifying, a short video about what it means to be gifted from the perspective of a student, brief coverage of research around characteristics (cross-cultural, Pasifika, Cook Islands, Samoan, Tongan and Maori) and finishes off with leading into consultation and putting the findings into action. There is also a list of links for information and support.

Here you will find one document which contains both a qualitative and a quantitative survey to find out your community's conceptions of giftedness and talent. It is helpful to present the slideshow or talk with those completing the survey first to be able to put their responses into the context of giftedness and talent as being exceptional qualities and abilities - demonstrated or showing potential.

This pamphlet outlines some useful ideas to help families; understand their child's gifted qualities better, respond to their child positively and to see how they might support them. Website links are also provided for families to be able to find out further information. It is useful to make available written information for families to take home and read. Many Pasifika families have come to New Zealand for opportunities to learn and get jobs, and so place a high value on education and are keen to learn. Likewise it can be helpful for families who do not speak English at home or for whom English is a second language, as they have more time to work through the information.
